Title: Estates/Probates Dates(s): 1804-2000 Level of Description: Series Extent and Medium of Unit: 224 Flip Cases, 9752 records Immediate Source of Acquisition/Transfer: General Registry of Belize. The Records were acquired by the department in 1989, 2007 and 2013 respectively. Scope and Content: The series consist of probates and administration of estates. It is the first step in the legal process of administering the estate of a deceased person, resolving all claims and distributing the personal and real property of the deceased. Arranged chronologically by year completed and thereafter alphabetically by last name. Dates(s): 1885-1954 Level of Description: Series Extent and Medium of Unit: 11,146 Files Names of Creator(s): Colonial Secretary Office Administrative/Biography History: Previously the Office of the Government Secretary. In 1842 the office was restructured and became the Office of the Colonial Secretary. The Colonial Secretary acted as a middle man between the public and the Governor. Under the direction of the governor, he conveyed all directives to government departments and responded to queries and concerns from the public to the Governor or Executive Council. Immediate Source of Acquisition/Transfer: Belize General Registry (to be confirmed) Scope and Content: These files relate to the colonial administration of the country and contain departmental reports and letters from individuals to the Governor. Information that can be gathered include, but are not limited to, department annual reports, legislative decisions, land related matters, and concerns from individuals/organizations/businesses local and foreign, alike. Title: Crown Land Titles Dates(s): 1856 – 470/1996 Level of Description: Series Extent and Medium of Unit: 175 Books Names of Creator(s): Land Titles Registry/Land Titles Unit Immediate Source of Acquisition/Transfer: Years 1856-1971 were acquired from the Belize General Registry (dated currently unknown) and the years 1971-1996 were acquired from the Land Titles Unit in January 2008. Scope and Content: Records created for lease and purchase of crown land under the old land system. It consists of Titles for Leases, Grants and Licenses for cutting of fustic and a few Licenses for archaeological site work. Each title consists of a Fiat and Grant until the Year 1975 when individual plans were no longer created for Leases. Arranged in Numerical Sequence by year and title number.
